Smallholder farmers in Uganda sit at the heart of the country’s agricultural economy, yet many still farm on less than a hectare of land and struggle to move beyond subsistence livelihoods. For these farmers, the challenge is not willingness to invest or improve—it is access. Limited income, weak rural infrastructure, and poor availability of quality inputs and extension services mean that even basic investments, like improved seeds or tree seedlings, remain out of reach. As climate pressures intensify, this lack of access keeps many farmers locked in low productivity and high vulnerability.
Our partnership with Solidaridad aims to close this gap by equipping farmers with training and planting materials that enable them to transform their land into more resilient systems. As trees take root, they rebuild soil fertility, protect crops from heat and erratic rainfall, and support more stable yields. At the same time, carbon finance provides an income stream that allows farmers invest in their land and sustain these systems over time.
The project has already undertaken the following activities:
Farmer-led project design
Farmer-led community trainings
A selection of the trees (according to traditional knowledge, and farmer desires, and the agroforestry design)
Training sessions by lead farmers for their local community
Established nurseries and seedling distribution
Pruning of shade trees
Pest control activities
