Together with our partners on the ground, we collect quality field data to establish each a strong foundation for each project. We combine this with remote sensing technologies to monitor tree growth and carbon storage over time.

High-quality field data is critical to ensuring that Acorn projects run smoothly and deliver accurate, meaningful results. We work closely with local partners to train and deploy field technicians and data collectors. These teams inform farmers about the project, explain its benefits, and support them in registering if they choose to participate.
In addition, field technicians play a key role in collecting on-the-ground measurements. This data is used to establish a reliable baseline, which strengthens and calibrates our remote sensing models.

To measure and track biomass growth across our projects, we use remote sensing—a reliable, data‑driven approach utilizing high‑resolution satellite imagery and LiDAR technology at scale. This allows us to monitor progress, identify issues, and better support farmers and our local partners.
The resulting high‑quality data feeds into our biomass model, where it is refined through key adjustments, including accounting for pre‑existing trees, leakage, and uncertainty, improving the accuracy of our measurements of biomass growth and carbon sequestration.
Once a farmer’s plot has stored at least one tonne of carbon, we can issue Acorn credits, which undergo on‑the‑ground verification by a third party.

Our Acorn Biomass Model Report provides insight into the way we calculate the biomass changes in trees planted on smallholder farms.

When you buy Acorn credits, you are purchasing actual CO2 stored in planted trees (often referred to as ‘ex post’) – not the prevention of emissions, as is the case in many other programs. Acorn units are sold after the fact, when the trees have already converted CO2 into biomass. We measure stored CO2 on a smallholder farmer’s land with the help of remote sensing technology.
We also offer buyers the possibility to pre-finance a project to or purchase ex-post CRUs through multi-year offtake contracts. These contracts play a catalytic role for Acorn to attract financing for our local partners. If this sounds interesting to you, please contact our sales team at sales@acorn.earth.
