This Plan Vivo-certified Acorn project, run by our partner Kaderes Peasant Development Public Limited Company (KPD PLc) in Tanzania, supports over 123,000 smallholder coffee farmers in the Karagwe, Kyerwa, Muleba, Bukoba, Missenyi, Ngara and Biharamulodistricts within Kagera region.
The project is located in one of the poorest regions in Tanzania, with a UNDP Human Development Indicator of 0.555. Most of the inhabitants are smallholder coffee-banana farmers and are living on less than $1 a day. They have no access to pre-financing, loans or saving mechanisms. With Kaderes' and Acorn's support, these farmers now have access to affordable financing and technical support to make the shift toward agroforestry practices. The project supports the farmers with native trees and fruit species seedlings, training on agroforestry practices and climate-resilient farming practices.
The project is run by Kaderes, a public limited liability company established in 2008, with extensive experience in such projects. Prior to registration as KPD PLc, Kaderes operated as Karagwe development and Relief Services (NGO) from 1998. Kaderes does not work with a fixed number of smallholder farmers, but assists a constantly growing and expanding network. Its mission is to empower members and communities to contribute to sustainable land use and environmental conservation by focusing on the scaling of their agroforestry project.

Over the course of our 3-year partnership, the project has planted over 4 million seedlings through their district nurseries in Missenyi, Kyerwa and Muleba.
Kaderes and Acorn continue to support smallholder coffee farmers in the Karagwe and Kyerwa districts to overcome low productivity and crop loss from climate change by transitioning from cultivated land to agroforestry. Farmers are rewarded for the sustainable changes in their farming practices with increased crop yield, food security, and income diversification. In addition to these livelihood benefits, the environment also thrives under such an agroforestry system, resulting in healthier soils and enhanced biodiversity.
