Why this project matters
Cashew is one of Mozambique’s most important smallholder crops, with more than a million smallholders growing it. However, in the project regions of Meconta and Monapo, many cashew orchards are old and sparsely planted, repeatedly damaged by cyclones and far below the density they should be. Independent research shows younger, well-spaced trees with proper management can yield at least two times more than old poorly spaced trees. With Mozambique’s government targeting a near-fourfold rise in national cashew output by 2034, our partnership with TechnoServe is designed to help close that gap locally by replanting cashew at recommended density and ringing plots, in addition to planting windbreak and fruit trees for added resilience and income.
