Why this project matters
Across the project regions of Nampula, Zámbézia and Manica, smallholder households produce staple crops on small plots with little tree cover. These producers grapple with poor soil fertility, unreliable seed and seedling supply, thin market access, and increasingly frequent cyclones and erratic rains, leaving many farmers reluctant to plant trees for fear of losing space for the food crops their families depend on.
Our partnership with CRIMAS is designed to remove this trade-off: the project co-designs tree choices with farmers instead of imposing them, and subsidizes seedlings by 70–80% through Mozambique’s e-voucher system so households don’t have to choose between food crops and trees. Fruit, timber and fast-growing fodder trees are planted alongside existing crops, adding new sources of food and income, while families keep growing what already feeds them. Our project also contributes to farmer trainings and economic opportunities through 37 new community nurseries, giving nearby households an additional source of paid work. Participating smallholders also stand to receive future carbon credit revenue as the trees mature.
