Vacancy: Finance Intern

About Acorn

Acorn is on a mission to empower smallholder farmers globally, turning climate action into farmer income through agroforestry. We currently work with 600,000 farmers in more than 15 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. That income comes from the sale of carbon credits, generated by the trees the farmers plant on their land.

Finance is far more than a back-office function. You will be closely involved in the business, seeing firsthand how projects, costs, and reporting connect within a growing organization, and how your contributions help drive success.

The role

As a Finance Intern, you will work closely with the Financial Controller and support a wide range of financial activities, including daily administration, month-end closing, and reporting. This internship offers a comprehensive introduction to the finance function, giving you hands-on experience with everything from invoice processing to financial reporting, as well as the systems and tools that drive our business.

What you will be doing

This internship offers a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge of:

  • Reviewing, coding, and processing purchase invoices using Pleo;

  • Reconciling bank transactions and resolving any discrepancies;

  • Checking credit card expenses and employee reimbursements, ensuring receipts and project allocations are accurate;

  • Supporting month-end closing activities and helping ensure accurate financial records;

  • Assisting in the preparation of monthly management reports;

  • Contributing ideas to improve financial processes and work instructions, helping the team work more efficiently and effectively;

We are looking for someone who

  • Is currently studying Finance & Control, Accountancy, or a similar Bachelor's programme;

  • Has an interest in finance and administration and enjoy working with numbers and data;

  • Is accurate, proactive, and not afraid to challenge or question things when needed;

  • Can work independently while also being a strong team player;

  • Communicates confidently in both Dutch and English, verbally and in writing;

  • Is familiar with Exact Online, Excel, or Pleo is a plus, but we’re happy to teach you the rest

This internship is ideal for someone who wants to develop their finance skills in a supportive environment, gain hands-on experience, and apply their academic knowledge in practice.

What we offer

  • A challenging and rewarding internship in an international organisation committed to making a positive impact;

  • Direct mentorship from our Financial Controller, providing insight into the complete finance function;

  • The chance to gain practical experience and take ownership of meaningful projects rather than simply observing;

  • A monthly internship allowance of € 500 based on a full-time (40-hour) working week;

  • A 5-to-6-month internship, with flexibility around the start date;

  • A collaborative office environment in Utrecht, with flexibility to work partly from home in consultation with your mentor;

  • Valuable hands-on experience that will help you kick-start your career in finance and accounting.
